An OBD2 reader can help you record information from a compatible vehicle's diagnostic system. It does not inspect every mechanical part or automatically repair the cause of a warning light. Use it to organise useful questions for a technician, not to replace the vehicle manual or a proper diagnosis.
Check three separate compatibility questions
For Tezly's Smart OBD2 Car Scanner ELM327, confirm the vehicle model and diagnostic protocol, the adapter's actual connection type, and the phone app you intend to use. A connector fitting the socket does not prove that every requested system or data item is supported.

- Ask whether your exact vehicle and model year support the functions you want.
- Check the phone operating system and adapter connection; Bluetooth versions and app compatibility can differ.
- Distinguish basic engine/emissions data from specialist ABS, airbag or manufacturer-specific functions.
Record information before changing anything
Follow the vehicle and adapter instructions while parked in a safe location. Save the exact trouble code, its status and any available associated data, along with the symptoms and circumstances you noticed. A screenshot or written log is more useful than simply saying that the scanner found an engine problem.
EPA's OBD explanation describes the system's role in monitoring faults and storing diagnostic information. A code points to a condition that needs investigation; it is not a guaranteed instruction to replace one named part.
Use the results in a workshop conversation
For example, note whether a warning appeared at startup, during a particular journey or after servicing. Give the technician the recorded codes and vehicle history. Do not assume two cars with the same code have the same underlying fault.
Avoid clearing codes merely to hide a warning. Clearing information does not repair the cause and can remove useful evidence or reset readiness information. Follow the vehicle manual's directions for warning lights, especially when accompanied by unusual running, heat or other symptoms.
Beginner questions
Can it diagnose every vehicle system?
Not automatically. Ask which modules and functions the exact adapter/app combination supports.
Will it work with my iPhone?
Confirm the particular adapter connection and app requirements. Do not rely on a generic Bluetooth label.
Should I leave the adapter plugged in?
Check the vehicle and adapter instructions for power use, parked operation and removal. Do not assume every socket switches off with the ignition.
